Investment at AWE should not precede debate on Trident replacement

The Commons Defence Committee published a report on the 19th December which concludes that investment in the Orion Laser could have waited until after the decision in principle on the future of UK's nuclear weapons.

The report criticises the secrecy surrounding AWE and recommends that, before any debate on the future of nuclear weapons, the MoD "should clarify what additional investment the Government intends to make".

The Committee was "less convinced that investment in the new Orion Laser, the supercomputer and hydrodynamics facilities could not have waited for a decision in principle on the future of the UK's nuclear deterrent" and said that investment should follow, and not precede, policy decisions.
