AWPC/BtB block Parliament Square: 14 March 2007

As parliament sat to discuss the government's motion on Trident replacement, activists from Aldermaston Women's Peace Camp(aign) and Block the Builders pulled off an audacious blockade of Parliament Square, despite a large police presence. Using a customised mock Trident missile, banners, and three concrete-bin lock-ons, 11 people brought the Square to a standstill for 30 minutes while police attempted to remove those locked-on. For the following two hours the Square's six lanes were reduced to two, as specialist police teams used jackhammers and cutting discs to dismantle the lock-ons. Nine people were arrested for obstructing the highway and participating in an unauthorised demonstration (SOCPA). All will appear at Horseferry Road magistrates court on 27 March.

SOCAP arrest: 10 March 2007

At the start of the week that sees a vote on Trident replacement (14 March), Juliet McBride from Aldermaston Women's Peace Camp was arrested on Saturday 10 March 2007, after spending over two hours on a high security fence surrounding the new Orion laser at the Atomic Weapons Establishment, Aldermaston.
