In September 2009, the government plan to make a decision about the replacement of the Vanguard sumarines which currently carry the UK's Trident missiles. They plann to make this decision (the "Initial Gate" decision) behind closed doors during the parliamentary reccess.

We don't think they should make this decision without consulting parliament, and we certainly don't think they  should make it now.

Over the past few months, more and more people, politicians, journalists and think-tanks have started to question whether we need a replacement for Trident. Even those who support nuclear weapons are beginning to ask if it's the right time to start spending money on replacing Trident. Others are saying that we need to choose whether we spend up to estimated £76 billion on weapons of mass destruction or on health, social welfare, education and other things that people need.

The government is proposing a Defence Review: please write to your MP -

- tell them why we don't need to replace Trident

- ask them to call for a delay on the "initial gate" decision and for a stop to all new building work at AWE Aldermaston and Burghfield until the Defence Review takes place;

- ask them to ensure that Trident replacement is included in the Defence Review.

Please send your letter or email before 31 August 2009.
